In Nigeria, there are several electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOs). We have up to 11 electricity distribution companies in Nigeria. They all play a great role in our economy, as far as power is concerned.

Abuja Distribution Company

This power company was privatized in November 2013. Abuja Distribution Company covers FCT, Kogi, and Nassawara, Niger. The total area of coverage is up to133, 000 square kilometers. The Federal Government of Nigeria still holds 40% of the company’s assets. It’s currently one of the major power distributors in Nigeria.

Enugu Distribution Company

The Enugu Distribution Company covers for states – Ebonyi, Abia, Imo, Anambra, and Enugu. The company supplies quality electricity services of energy distribution to all the 5 states.

The total area of the geographical coverage is up to 67,128 square kilometers. The combined population of 3 states is about 20 million citizens.

Kaduna Distribution Company

This company is one of the downstream operators. It supplies electricity to the following states, Sokoto, Kaduna, Kebbi, and Zamfara. Kaduna Distribution Company is considered to be the 7th largest distribution company in Nigeria, with about 8 offices. The total area of coverage is around 490,000.

The current chairman of Kaduna Distribution Company is Alhaji Yusuf Hamisu Abubakar, while the CEO is Garba Haruna. Alhassan Dantata, Jamil Gwamna, Alhaji Garba Y. Imam, and Tajudeen Dantata, are the four directors of the company.

Yola Distribution Company

Yola Distribution Company covers only 4 states: Adamawa, Yobe, Taraba, and Borno. It was formally privatized in 2013. The power company is also one of the main distributors of electricity in Nigeria.

Jos Distribution Company

Jos Distribution Company is one of the major electricity distributing companies in Nigeria. It provides services to states like Gombe, Plateau, Benue, and Bauchi.

Benin Distribution Company

Benin Distribution Company also provides services to 4 states: Ondo, Delta, Ekiti, and Edo state. So far, it renders power services to 25 business districts within the country. The total coverage includes 13 million users and over 4 million households, while the total coverage area of the company is around 55,770 square kilometers.

Eko Distribution Company

Eko distribution is a small electricity distribution company that covers two states – Ogun and Lagos (also Agbara). To make the operation of the distribution easy, the company is divided into10 districts and 3 circles.

Ibadan Distribution Company

This distribution company was launched in November 2013 as a part of a plan to unbundle the energy sector of Nigeria. Ibadan Electricity Company supplies power to only four states, which are Osun, Kwara, Ogun, and Oyo. It organized 5 business hubs across Nigeria. Ibadan Distribution Company also has a strong partnership with Meralco Company, which is one of the largest distributors of energy in the Philippines.

Port Harcourt Distribution Company

The company is always dedicated to improving the quality of services it provides for over 14 million people. The Port Harcourt Distribution Company covers four neighboring states: Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Bayelsa, and Rivers state. The key vision of this power company is to offer high-quality utility services to the public.

Kano Distribution Company

Kano Electricity Distribution Company is one of the 11 major electricity distribution companies in the country. It was established in May 2012. The company is a consortium of five other electricity companies in Kano state. Kano Distribution Company currently covers three states: Kano, Jigawa, and Katsina.

Ikeja Distribution Company

Ikeja Electric is one of the major distributors of power in Nigeria. This electric distribution company commenced operations in November 2013. It currently provides electricity services to more than 1,000,000 customers.

These are the current 11 electricity Distribution Companies (DISCOs) in Nigeria. They are often committed to innovation and seeking ways to offer better services to the general public. Electricity has been a major challenge in Nigeria. There is still more to be done for better power servicing.
