According to some estimates, Nigeria is considered the second most religious country in the world and the most religious country in Africa. Its population is divided into two groups: Muslims, who live primarily in the north, and Christians, who live primarily in the south.
Christianity is the dominant religion in Nigeria, with over 48 percent of the population professing it.
There are several churches in Nigeria, and each one has a unique style of worship that differs from the rest of the country.

However, there are some parallels between these religions in that they both proclaim the gospel and believe in Jesus Christ, who is widely regarded as the founder of Christian doctrine.

Churches in Nigeria

There are several church denominations in the country, each with its own worship system that is distinct from the others. The only thing that both Nigerian churches have in common is that they both profess to teach the Gospel and believe in Jesus Christ, who is regarded as the founder of Christianity across the globe.

In Nigeria, the first church was the Cathedral of St. Peters in Abeokuta, which was an Anglican church. This was followed by the Catholic Church, which was then followed by the Pentecostal churches, all of which were founded in the same year.

The Catholic Church

The Evangelical Reformed Church of Christ

It was in 1916 that the Sudan United Mission (SUM) first introduced the message of salvation to Keana town, Nasarawa State, and thus marked the foundation of the Evangelical Reformed Church of Christ.

The Evangelical Reformed Church of Christ is a historic mainstream or missionary church with a long history of missionary work. When it is described as a missionary church, it is immediately divided into two historical periods: the missionary era that began centuries ago and the indigenous era that began more recently and has continued until the current day.

The Anglican Church of Nigeria

This church, which is also known as the Anglican Communion, can trace its roots back to the Church of England. Since its founding in 1842 by Henry Townsend during colonial times, the number of people who visit this church has been steadily increasing.

On the basis of population, there are around 18 million baptized Anglican church members in the nation, who are organized into dioceses and parishes under the leadership of archbishops, bishops, and other reverends, among others.

Redeemed Christian Church of God (Rccg)

In 1952, the Rev. Josiah Akindayomi founded the Reformed Christian Church of God (RCCG), which would later be overseen by Pastor Enoch Adeboye, who is considered one of Nigeria’s most renowned men of God.

As of now, the Redeemed Christian Church of God is the most populous Pentecostal church in Nigeria in terms of congregation size, and it also boasts the largest auditorium in the country, which is reported to hold more than half of the church’s total membership. Presbyterian Church of Nigeria

Presbyterian missionary work in Nigeria began in 1846 thanks to the efforts of freed slaves from Jamaica, Scottish missionaries, and the rulers of Calabar who came together to form a coalition. As a presbytery of Biafra, the church was established in 1858, then as a synod of Biafra, which was established in 1921, and finally as the Presbyterian Church of Biafra, which was established in 1945 under its current name and constitution.

Following Nigeria’s independence from the United Kingdom, the Presbyterian Church of Eastern Nigeria was established in 1952, and the Presbyterian Church of Nigeria was established in 1960.

The Session, presbytery, synod, and general assembly are the four courts that govern the church today. The parishes range in size from one to nine congregations, depending on the size of the community.

It is important to note that the Presbyterian Church in Nigeria is a member of the worldwide tradition of Reformed churches, and as such, it believes in the gospel of God’s sovereign grace in Christ over all domains of human existence.

While the PCN has incorporated the Westminster Confession of Faith and other confessions of the Reformed tradition into its theological principles, the Scriptures remain the final authority on all matters. Women are welcome to serve in the ministry at the church. In 1982, the world’s first female pastor was ordained. Today, the church is served by well over 50 women who are ministers of the gospel.

The Living Faith Church Worldwide

Living Faith Church Worldwide, also known as Winners Chapel by some of its followers, was founded in 1981 by Bishop David Oyedepo, who is the richest pastor in the world according to Forbes and serves as the organization’s General Overseer.

With a membership base of up to 1 million people, this Pentecostal church is also one of the most well-known in the country today. The church’s auditorium is one of the largest in the world, and it can accommodate up to 300,000 people during vigils or prayer crusades.

Christ Embassy

Also included on the list is Christ Embassy, which was founded by Pastor Chris Oyakhilome in 1990. In addition, he serves as the congregation’s general overseer and as its senior pastor.

Christ Embassy is a religious organization with several chapters around the country, with its headquarters in Lagos. Pastor Chris is widely regarded as one of the most important preachers of his time, and he has authored a number of spiritual works to his credit as well.

Mountain Of Fire and Miracle Ministry

In 1989, Dr. Daniel Olukoya started this Pentecostal church, which is also known as MFM. It is fully registered with the Christian Association of Nigeria and has been in operation since 1989.

In addition to regular firebrand prayer meetings, this church boasts a large church auditorium that can accommodate about 400,000 people during their crusades.

Church of the Brethren Mission

It was in 1923 by two American Brethren named H. Stover Kulp and Albert D. Helser that the Church of the Brethren Mission in Nigeria (CBM) was established. In June 1922, the Church of the Brethren General Mission Board granted permission for Kulp and Helser to travel to Africa as missionaries on behalf of the church.

Eventually, they were granted permission to establish themselves in Garkida, which was at the time a small hamlet in Bornu Province. A group of three Nigerian men, including Garba from Zaria, John, the chef who belonged to the Igbo tribe in the southeast, and Mr. Danboyi of the Pabir people, who served as their interpreter, aided them in their first days of labor in the field.

The Apostolic Church

The Apostolic Church is another certified church that deserves to be mentioned. Gabriel Olutola, the organization’s founder, was a well-known man of God in his day.

This is one of the oldest churches in Nigeria, having been established in 1931. It has several branches around the nation, which may be located in different states.

Deeper Life Christian Ministry

Dr. William F. Kumuyi created the Deeper Life Church in 1982, and it has been in existence ever since. The ministry began with only 15 people and has grown to include over 900,000 people who attend services.

There are few churches in the country that are as well-known for their rigid commitment to biblical doctrines as they are for their strict adherence to the dress code.

Commonwealth Of Zion Assembly

This recognized church, also known as COZA, is well-known among the younger generation. The COZA ministry was established in 1999 by the Reverend Biodun Fatoyinbo and has a significant presence throughout the country.

Daystar Christian Center

The owner of this congregation is Pastor Samuel Adeyemi, a motivational speaker. During the course of its history, it has been the mission of this religious institution to grow up leaders for Christ who would take the initiative in proclaiming the Gospel of Jesus Christ with boldness and strength.

Synagogue Church Of All Nations

This Christian group was founded by the late Prophet T.B Joshua, who was considered to be one of Nigeria’s most powerful prophets, capable of predicting the future. He also served as the organization’s general overseer and is renowned for delivering miracles.

His ministry’s headquarters are located in Ikotun, in the state of Lagos. The church’s premises are believed to be visited by more than 15,000 people on a Sunday alone, owing to the fact that people from all walks of life come to see the man of God in hopes of receiving miracles and healing.

Fountain of Life Church

This church used to be one of the most popular in the country, and it was particularly popular among young unmarried people at the time.

Dr. Bimbo Odukoya, who passed away recently, started the organization. The program “Single & Married,” which she hosted while she was alive, was a hit with viewers.

Cherubim And Seraphim (C&S)

The names CHERUBIM and SERAPHIM are derived from the Hebrew words for “crown” and “seraphim” (C & S).
It was created in 1925 by Prophet Moses Orimolade and is known by the initials C & S. In Nigeria, C & S has a significant following of followers.

It is one of the country’s oldest churches, and it is credited with inspiring the establishment of other types of white-garment churches in Nigeria.

The Church of Christ Apostolic (CAC)

In addition to being one of the largest churches in Nigeria, Christ Apostolic Church, which was founded in 1941 by its founder, Joseph Ayo Babalola. Pastor A.O. Akinosun is the current leader of the organization.

It is also referred to as a “white garment church” or the “first Aladura Church” in the country, and it has branches all over the world, with several factions represented inside the organization. It was founded in the year 2000.

Methodist Church of Nigeria

The Methodist Church, which is also one of the most important churches in Nigeria, was established in 1842 by British missionaries, although it can trace its origins back to John Wesley, the religion’s founder.

Currently, the leader of the Methodist Church in Nigeria is Prelate Samuel Chukwuemeka Uche Kanu, and the church has several branches throughout the country’s different states and regions.

Salvation Ministries

Salvation Ministries is a Nigerian church that is quite famous. Their headquarters are in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, and they were founded in 1997 by David Ibiyeomie, who is also the organization’s current general overseer.

They offer a Bible Institute where people who aspire to pursue a career in Christian religious life can enroll and get training to serve as pastors in one of their many congregations.

The Lord’s Chosen Christian Charismatic Movement

Nigeria’s new generational churches, which broke away from the Catholic Church and have their headquarters in Lagos, are represented by this organization.

It was created in 2002 by Pastor Lazarus Muoka and today has a substantial number of breakaway Catholics, many of whom come from the country’s southwest and south-eastern regions.

Celestial Church of Christ

This is another significant white garment church in Nigeria, founded by Samuel Bilehou in 1947 and considered to be the second-largest in the country. He also serves as the general supervisor of the church.

Nigerian Baptist Convention

Aside from that, there is another historic church that can be found in Nigeria whose history can be traced back to the period of the colonial overlords. Baptist missionaries were responsible for the establishment of this Christian religious organization.

We can’t tell for certain whether they are among the greatest churches in Nigeria, but they do have a large congregation, particularly in the southwestern part of the country. The headquarters of the Baptist Church is located in Ibadan.

Royal House of Grace International Church

This is another significant church in Nigeria that was founded by Apostle Zilly Aggrey in 1992 and is still active today. The current chief executive officer is David Zilly Aggrey, and the organization’s headquarters are in Port Harcourt.
