Almost all laboratory services in Nigeria are integrated in a three-tier public health system. That is, they are on the primary, secondary, and tertiary levels. Also, there are laboratories which offer several services for special and complex tests – the likes of Disease Specific Reference Laboratories, Research Laboratories, and Reference Laboratories.

The private and public sector often offer lab support at every level of the healthcare – from urban to rural areas. Also, only trained and qualified staff are employed. They are to upgrade their skills periodically.

The importance of the lab test results cannot be underestimated. Same goes for the its role in the process of diagnosing and treating diseases. Combine these with physical examination, the history, and some x-ray studies, laboratory diagnoses often traced back to great Medical Diagnostic readings.

Worldwide, the essential role quality medical laboratories play is well recognized. Error in lab results will lead to wrong treatment, litigation, misdiagnosis, and several hazardous cases.

In 2004, the International Organization for Standardization has harmonized standards which will help Medical Laboratories produce good quality test results. For this, ISO15189 was officially announced. This was the international quality standard regarding global Medical Laboratories.
