The Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, FMARD, is responsible for ensuring food security in livestock and fisheries, crop, and the stimulation of agricultural employment and services. It also has the mandate to provide markets for products regarding the industrial sector, the promotion of production as well as the supply of raw materials for the agro sector. It also aids rural socio-economic development and the generation of foreign exchange.

Ultimately, the vision of this Ministry is to grow and develop the agriculture sector of Nigeria. That is – to achieve a hunger-free country via the agricultural industry (driving in more income, advancing in food and nutritional security, transforming the nation into a key player in the global food markets, and creating more employment opportunities. This in turn would build wealth for many farmers in Nigeria.

This Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is funded by the Federal Government of Nigeria. And it currently superintendents up to 50 parastatals – they operate as either key agencies or departments across Nigeria.

On June 2011, President Goodluck Jonathan appointed Akinwumi Adesina as the Minister of the FMARD. In 2015, Audu Innocent Ogbeh succeeded him, who was appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari.

President Muhammadu Buhari, in his second term, didn’t retain the service of Audu Innocent Ogbeh. In 2019, Sabo Nanono was appointed.

The present Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development is Dr. Mu’azu Abdulkadir.

  • Age must be 35 or less. Above 35 is not allowed.
  • Applicants must be computer literate.
  • OND, NCE, HND, or B.Sc in any discipline. This should be from an institution that is recognized.
  • NECO or GCE (Ordinary Level). Passes must be in four subjects at a sitting or five subjects obtained at 3 sittings – English Language must be included in both. OR either WASC or SSSC. Credits must be at least in three subjects, English Language included, plus a minimum of two passes in other two subjects.
  • A National Diploma (ND), General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level), or National Certificate of Education (NCE) from a recognized institution. Passes in a minimum of two subjects obtained at a sitting, or three subjects at two sittings.
