[DETAILED] How the Nigeria Navy swimming training is done

Completing the Nigerian Navy (Check out the Nigerian Navy Seamen Salary)_ Swim training is no small task. The Nigerian Navy has two qualification classes, the 3rd class and the 2nd class. Before you can qualify to take the classes, you must pass the swim skills assessment test. This test is to show that you are comfortable and relaxed in the water. 

The basic skill assessment test.

In this test, you will be measured on your ability to swim 15 yards in chest-deep water and another 15 yards in water over your head. You must be able to tread the water for one minute and float face down for one minute. If you enrol for basic swimming lessons, you will be equipped with these skills. Remember, the military is not like any other institution, which means your goal is not just to pass but to exceed. 

Understanding the 2nd and 3rd class swim test

3rd class swim test

There are two modules in the third class swim test. In the first module, there are three separate events, a 50-yard swim, a deep water jump and a 5-minute prone float. You can do this in any other. Module two consists of a prone float and t-shirt and trousers inflation in deep water. The meaning of deep water here means water deep enough to cover your mouth, nose and head.

NOTE: Module one has to be completed before module two. You must note do the two modules on the same day.

Once you have an event in a module, you can move to the next one and you don’t have to repeat it.

Deep Water Jump:  deepwater jump must be performed from a minimum height of 8 feet above the water. An individual must develop to swim to the surface unassisted by anybody or a device. The focus of the performance standard for Deep Water jumps is

  1. Arms
  2. Body position
  3. legs.

50-yard Swim: An individual must complete the total distance without standing, stopping or holding on to anything. During this event, your strokes will be graded. The focus of the performance standard for the 50-yard Swim is

  1. Breaststroke
  2. Sidestroke
  3. Elementary Backstroke
  4. crawl stroke

Prone float: During this session, if a student displays any nature of improper breathing, he or she will be removed from the water immediately. During the prone float, there will be a focus on your performance. The focus of the performance standard for prone float is 

  1. body position –
  2. your arms – 
  3. your breathing – not more than 20 breaths per minute
  4. Coordination – You must always stay at the surface, you must be able to stay in a particular location during this session.

Shirt and trousers inflation: If a student displays problems with the session, the student will be removed from the water before they become exhausted. For the inflation test, you are going to fill your trousers and shirt with air. You will be on the surface for the whole process. The focus of the performance standard for Shirt and trousers inflation is

  1. shirt inflation – A swimmer will stay on the surface, the back of the shirt will contain a bubble of air.
  2. Trousers removal
  3. Trousers inflation.

2nd class swim test

Before you can qualify for the 2nd class swim test, you must pass the 3rd class swim test. Without it, you cannot qualify for the 2nd class. In the 2nd class swim, there are a few activities to be done. These activities are,

  1. 100-yard swim. In every 25 yards, you will be demonstrating the crawl stroke, breaststroke, sidestroke and elementary stroke.
  2. immediately after the first activity, you won’t leave the water, you move to the next activity, the prone float. The student will prone float for 5 minutes and transition to a back float for then, they can exit the water.

Deep Water Jump: the deepwater jump must be done from a minimum height of 5 feet. The depth of the water must be a minimum of 8 feet. During this activity, the students must have the ability to swim to the surface without the help of anyone or any device. The focus of the performance standard for Deep Water jumps is

  1. Arms
  2. Body position
  3. legs.

100-yard Swim: During the 100-yard swim, the student can not hold or rest on anything. The only time a student is allowed to touch the pool is when they make their turn. A turn lasts only a few seconds. The focus of the performance standard for the 100-yard Swim is

  1. Breaststroke
  2. Sidestroke
  3. Elementary Backstroke
  4. crawl stroke

Note: Inhalation and exhalation can be performed at any or all stages of the stroke.

Prone and Back Float: Just like in the 3rd class, if a student displays any nature of improper breathing, he or she will be removed from the water. The focus of the performance standard for prone and back float is 

  1. body position
  2. your arms 
  3. your legs
  4. your breathing 
  5. Coordination – You must always stay at the surface, you must be able to stay in a particular location during this session
