The Nigerian Navy was formed from the now-defunct Nigerian Marine. It was formed and organized by the British colonial powers after the Amalgamation of the Northern and Southern Protectorate in 1914.
As of 1914, the Nigerian Marine as it was known then was a quasi-military agency that was initially restricted to the Northern region alone.
By 1915 the Northern Nigerian Marine was expanded to accommodate the Southern part of Nigeria. The Nigerian Navy is charged with the security of the Seaports, harbors, buoyage, and other water bodies.
The Nigerian Navy also help to established Nigeria’s sovereignty over its water bodies and protect Nigeria against external aggression through the waterways.
What is the name of the rank?
The lowest rank in the Nigerian Navy is Recruit. Recruits make up about 80% of Naval recruitment. They are those recruited under the Junior officers cadre recruitment of the Nigerian Navy.
How to attain this rank
To attain this rank, applicants must fulfill certain requirements that are subject to change by the Nigerian Navy. The following are the requirements for recruitment into the Nigerian Navy as a Recruit.
Basic Requirements
- All applicants must possess at least credit passes in five subjects including Mathematics and English in WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB.
- Prospective applicants must be between the ages of 18 to 22 at the time of application.
- Applicants must not be married or pregnant
- Applicants must be Nigerian citizens through birth.
- Applicants must be at least 1.70m tall for males and 1.67 for females.

What is the salary you are expected to earn for this rank?
The salary for recruits Nigerian Navy is not officially available on the website of the Nigerian Navy. It is a norm in military and intelligence institutions not to disclose the salary of its service members, therefore, the official salary for Recruits of the Navy is not publicly available.
However, several military sources have shared that a recruit in the Nigerian Navy earns a salary of about 60 – 70k per month. Apart from the basic salary, there are provisions for the allowances like Travel allowance, Health, Education, and Furniture.

Pensions
Apart from the basic salary that all Naval officers are entitled to, all retired servicemen and women of the Nigerian Navy are placed under the contributory military pensions of the Armed Forces of Nigeria (See the Police Rank Equivalent to Military in Nigeria).
The Military Pensions Board is the official body saddled with the payment of military pensions in Nigeria. Every military officer is entitled to a monthly pension upon retirement. Retired recruits of the Nigerian Navy can earn about 25k to 60k per month as pension.
Housing
All officers of the Nigerian Navy are entitled to accommodation in the Nigerian Navy Barracks. The Nigerian Navy is also engaged in building housing estates in major bases of the institutions. The Navy Post Service Housing Scheme is a housing scheme provided by the Nigerian Navy to all its retired officers who have contributed to the program.
