Godwin Emefiele, a renowned Nigerian economist, is the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria. He has been Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria since 2014. During his time as the governor, Emefiele has pioneered several revolutionary policies. He introduced a multiple exchange rate regime to try to mask pressure on the Naira and avoid a series of devaluations.
In 2019, Nigeria’s Senate approved a second five-year term for Emefiele. He is the first CBN governor to serve for a second term since Nigeria’s return to democracy in 1999.

He was born on August 1961 in Lagos State, Nigeria. However, Emefiele hails from Ika South local government area of Delta State.
Godwin Emefiele completed his elementary education in 1973 at the Government Primary School, Victoria Island, Lagos. He proceeded to Maryland Comprehensive Secondary School, Ikeja, Lagos, graduating in June 1978. Emefiele holds a B.Sc. degree in Finance (1984) and an MBA in Finance (1986), both from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka. He is also an alumnus of Executive Education at Stanford University, Harvard University (2004) and Wharton School of Business (2005).
He is married to Margaret Emefiele.
Prior to his joining the CBN, he spent over 26 years in commercial banking culminating in his tenure as Group Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Zenith Bank PLC, one of Nigeria’s largest banks with over 7,000 staff, about US$3.2 billion in shareholders’ funds, and subsidiaries in Ghana, Sierra Leone, Gambia, South Africa, China, and the United Kingdom.
