The North East Development Commission, NEDC, is governmental organization which is responsible for coordinating, assessing, reporting, and harmonizing intervention programmes and all other initiatives by the government or its Ministries, Departments and Agencies, States any other development partners. The purpose is to put into implementation initiatives or programmes for the North East States – Gombe, Adamawa, Taraba, Borno, Yobe, and Bauchi.

Also, the North East Development Commission receives and managesfunds gotten fromthe FederalAccount includingInternational Donors – for the reconstruction of roads, business premises,settlements and rehabilitations. Also, these funds are used for tackling poverty, ecological issues, and illiteracylevelwith the North-East region.

Recently, the President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari inaugurated new governing board into the North East Development Commission.

The Chairman of the NEDC is Paul Tarfa who is a retired Major-General. The inauguration event was hosted at the Council Chamber of State House at the Presidential Villa AbujaFCT, Nigeria.

Members of theNEDC board include:

  • Muhammad Alkali – Managing Director.
  • Muhammad Jawa- Executive Director Administration and Finance.
  • Musa Yashi – Execut Director Humanitarian Affairs.
  • Omar Mohammed – Executive Director for Operations.
  • Asmau Mohammed – Represents the North West region.
  • Olawale Oshun – Represents theSouth West zone.
  • David Kente – Represents the North East zone.
  • Obasuke McDonald – Represents South South region.
  • Benjamin Adanyi – Represents the North Central zone.
  • Ekechi – Represents South-Eastzone.

According to President Buhari, the Commission was established to fulfill his administration’s pledge to develop the regions.

The North East Development Commission Act mandates that the body must coordinate the rehabilitation, resettlement, reconstruction and integration of infrastructure for terrorism and victims. The Commission is also responsible for tracking the menace of illiteracy, poverty, and ecological issues within States in the North-East of the nation

It was recorded sometime in December 2020 that the North East Development Commissionpreparedto launch a6 billion Naira fund for the Education Endowment Fund (NEDC-EEF). The project was to help at least 29,466 indigenes of the zones getaccess to someHigher Education Scholarship awards for Bachelors degree,  Masters degree, as well as the Doctorates degree.

Among the intentions of the Commission is to useagriculture and ICT (Information Communication and Technology) as a weapon to develop the economy of the North-East region.

The North East Development Commission at Maiduguri is located at No. 1, Makurdi Rd., Maiduguri, Borno State.

The NEDC Act initially stated that Maiduguri should be the headquarters of the Commission.

Today, the Commission is a fulfillment to the pledge made by the Buhari Administration to citizens in the North-Eastern zone. It was also a strategy to regenerate the socio-economic capacity if the zone.

So far, it has created job opportunities for the youths in the region. Centers have trained the youths in different areas such as Smartphone Managementand Repairs, Entrepreneurshipdevelopment, Digital Graphics Design, and the Basics of Computing.

The following are requiredfor your registration process to be smooth and successful:

  • Your first name.
  • Your last name.
  • Email address.
  • A passport photograph.
  • Your residential address.
  • Local Government of residence.
  • Applicant must be an origin of one of the North-East States – Bauchi, Adamawa, Borno, Yobe, Gombe, or Taraba.
  • Identification card. Either Voters card, National ID Card, International Passport, or others.
