Packaging: Packaging is the process of giving the product a usable protective and informational covering so that it protects the product throughout material handling, storage, and movement and also gives all parties concerned meaningful information about the package’s contents.

The Purpose of Packaging

Protection

Product safety during handling, transportation, and storage is very important. It prevents any shifting, moving, or colliding of the items inside the packaging during handling and movement, preventing any harm. The product needs to be shielded from environmental factors like heat, cold, moisture, etc. To avoid any adulteration, it should also be tamper-proof.

Unitize

To turn the package into a unit load, unitize. It facilitates handling and storage. If the packages were all the same size, the storage space would be used more efficiently and time and effort could be saved during handling, loading, and unloading.

Convenience

The package should be convenient for both consumers and logistical purposes. Convenience in logistics relates to handling and storage. Consumer convenience relates to things that are simple to open, carry, etc.

Contain

The package should be constructed to comfortably accommodate the predefined volume or quantity of the product it is meant to contain.

Package types

Cardboard boxes

In the packaging industry, corrugated boxes play a significant role. For many years, corrugated boxes have been the preferred type of packaging. On packaging lines all around the world, they are utilized to package a huge number of goods. Prefabricated rectangular box forms are typically available for corrugated boxes.

The cartons may need to be joined together by hand if they arrive in flat stacks. Corrugated boxes are frequently used in conjunction with case erectors for packing purposes. Case erectors are a type of packing equipment. They are simple to form into traditional boxes. The items are then packaged and shipped using the boxes. Corrugated boxes are frequently used for the packaging of electronics, consumer goods, DVDs, and prepackaged foods like chips, cereal, biscuits, and cookies.

Flexible Film

Stretch film is frequently employed by businesses with shipping divisions. Prior to shipping, it is utilized to keep its contents enclosed on pallets. This stops the goods from collapsing or getting damaged while being transported. Stretch film does this through a technique called “load containment.” Stretch film is frequently used for unitizing and packing multi-packs. Among them are multipacks of paper towels, toilet paper, and bottled water.

Shrink Wrap

There are many different sizes and shapes of shrink film compositions. The most frequent components are polyethylene (PE), polyolefin, and polyvinyl chloride (PVC) (POF). A particular application was considered when developing each composition. For example, polyolefin is the best shrink film to use for packing food. To package products, shrink film is combined with shrink tunnels and sealers. Examples include board games and boxes of frozen meals.

Polybags

The two most popular kinds of printed shrink film are polyolefin (or POF) shrink film and polyethylene shrink film. Polyethylene (or PE) shrink film, which is thicker than polyolefin films, is the type sold most frequently by shrink film manufacturers (also known as OEMs). Today, polyethylene, from which poly bags are manufactured, is one of the most widely used plastic packaging compositions. Polybags are well-liked for their tiny body size, pleasant touch, brightness, and versatility. They are frequently packaged with T-shirts, trade publications, bed linens, pillows, different mailers, and a range of other consumer goods.

Elastic pouches

Flexible pouches are typically made of foil or plastic (although they can be made of other materials). They serve a multitude of functions in packaging. Packaging for food, drinks, and industrial liquids are a few examples of these uses. They are available in other retail locations as well as on the shelves of grocery stores. These flexible pouches are frequently used in the packaging of food products. Compared to packaging materials like glass, paperboard, aluminum, and cardboard, they are less expensive to produce and have a smaller impact on the environment.

Packaging materials commonly used in Nigeria

1. Paper

There are primarily two types of paper utilized.

(i) Coarse papers and

(ii) Fine papers.

The vast majority of materials used for packing fall within the category of coarse paper. Fine papers are those that are used to write on, to cover books, to issue bonds, to keep ledgers, etc. The sulfate technique uses softwood to produce the strongest and most practical paper.

2. Plastic

Plastic is mainly utilized as a packing material. It is employed in the production of adhesives, containers, closures, films, and other materials.

A lot of factors will determine which polymers should be utilized for a certain application.

1. It is important to consider the environmental aspects of packaging, storing, and shipping.

2. The material must possess the physical properties to shield the contents from ambient conditions and mechanical harm.

The form in which the material is required must then be examined. It must be offered as a film if it is to be used as a wrapping material. Bags, blown bottles, tubes, etc. can be used to provide a secure closure for a container holding liquids or powders. For use as packaging materials, plastics are offered on the market under a variety of trade names.

3. Nylon

Rather than as a film, nylon is more well-known as fiber for woven or knitted garments. Due to its resistance to tearing, abrasion, grease, and chemicals, the army uses it to package replacement parts. Foods and goods that have been vacuum-or gas-packed or boiled can be wrapped in nylon film.

4. Metal Foil

Metal foil has the most outstanding position among flexible packaging materials. It is the ideal barrier for gases and moisture, and it may easily pass through any paper or plastic substance. Because of its luxurious look, it is frequently used to package expensive goods. When compared to other flexible materials, its price is somewhat high, but if thinner gauges can be employed, the price will be significantly reduced.

5. Glassware

Acids, chemicals, syrups, jams, medicines, and other items are stored in glassware of various sizes.

6. Metal containers

Steel drums, pails, tin cans, etc. Metal containers are used to pack a lot of goods. For instance, beer, fruits, vegetables, dairy products, pet food, soft drinks, meat and poultry, paint products, fish, antifreeze, baby food, and various other foods and non-foods. Cosmetics, shaving cream, pharmaceuticals, household goods, and other items are packaged in collapsible tubes.

7. Wooden Containers

Wood was one of the first materials used in packaging and is still highly practical. It plays a significant role in industrial packaging for bulky or delicate objects that need to be rigid and robust.

A few examples of the various types of wooden packing are baskets and hampers, tight and slack barrels, wire-bound boxes, pallets, and skids. They are constructed from plywood, veneer, or lumber. Wire, nails, screws, staples, and bands are some of the common types of fasteners used.
