When it comes to Judiciary in Nigeria, the Lagos State Judiciary is the oldest.

It has been in existence since the time of the Cession of Lagos to the British Government. Back then, it was known as the Colony Province Judiciary.

The Magistrates’ Courts were the first court to be established. This was followed by the established (it was known as the Supreme Court), where its jurisdiction was limited to Lagos alone. As self-government, the Federal Territory of Lagos took over the two forms of courts available – the Supreme Court and the Magistrates’ Courts.

When the Federal Supreme Court was created, the Lagos Supreme Court was made the High Court of the Federal Territory Lagos. On the 22nd of July, 1964, Hon. Justice Conrad Idowu Taylor served as the Chief Justice of the Court. The most well known and oldest Judicial building in Nigeria is the High Court building in Lagos State. It is the headquarters of the Court.

The Decree No. 4 of 1967 (Creation and Transitional Provisions) allowed the merging of the High Court and the Magistrate Court of the Federal Territory with the High Court and the Magistrate Court of the former Western Region (it was in Ikeja then). The Decree took effect on May 27, 1967, shortly after Lagos State was made as one of the 12 states by virtue of the provision of the States. It became the Lagos State Judiciary and the first Chief Justice was Hon. Justice Conrad Idowu Taylor. Chief Judge of Lagos State is the current title of the office. On November 7, 1973, the tenure of Hon. Justice Idowu Taylor as the Chief Judge was over.

On August 20, 2019, the current Chief Judge of Lagos State was sworn in. Hon. Justice Kazeem Alogba is the current and the 17th to hold the office.

The head of Courts is the Chief of Judge. Since January 2019, there are 59 Hon. Judges and 153 Magistrates in the Lagos State Judiciary.

In the Lagos State Judiciary, there are High Courts, Magistrate Courts, and Customary Courts. Each of them has its own Rules.

Also, the Chief Registrar of the High Court if Lagos State is the Chief Accounting Officer, Head of Administration, Tax Master, Official Receiver, Sheriff, and the Probate Registrar.

Also, civil servants with Grade Level 10 here earn between N220, 000 to N330, 000 monthly. For civil servants with Grade Level 15, the average salary is N400, 000 (N360, 000 to N500, 000.

Lagos state judiciary vacation

The Lagos State Judicial recently issued a notice detailing its annual vacation. The vacation commenced on Monday, August 17, 2020, and ended on Friday, September 11, 2020.

Lagos state judiciary probate

The Lagos Judiciary probate handles many applications. Sometimes, the process could be cumbersome.

There have been attempts to rebrand the Judiciary in Lagos State in order the maintain international standards. As part of these attempts, the Chief Judge (Justice Opeyemi Oke) recently launched an automation process of the probate registry.

Justice Oke spoke at the launch in Igbosere High Court of Lagos Island about how modern technology could be good leverage at the probate registry. It means that every human error and possible corruption within the department will be cut off to the barest. It will also make service delivery more effective and easier.

The Chief Judge also explained how repositioning the registry will ease the submission of probate applications. Introducing online payments will also revenue leakage as well as eliminate certain bureaucratic challenges.

Another point made by the Chief Registrar (Mrs. Taiwo Olatokun) was how the automation process would fasten customer service delivery. Members of the staff have gone through training that will allow them to use the innovation to deliver friendly support to the customers.
