History/background of the West African College of Surgeons
The West African College of Surgeons is an organisation for professionals. It is dedicated to promoting training, education, research, and examinations in surgery in Africa. Founded in 1960, the institution is the first to organise surgical a subspecialty training in the region.
The primary focus of this college is the accreditation of training institutions for trainees in all aspects of the surgical field – in West Africa sub-region. The West African College of Surgeons also conduct exams for all branches of surgery – including Dental Surgery, Ophthalmology, Anaesthesia, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Radiology, and many more.
It was recorded that the Association of Surgeons of West Africa was established in order to allow Surgeons in West African discuss the main challenges they face and to encourage cooperation among the first crop of foreign-trained surgeons in the region.
It was in December 3, 1960 that the first council meeting was held – at the University of Ibadan. The following year, the university hosted the first conference of the college.

West African College of Surgeons 2018
The West African College of Surgeons, in 2018, had a significant meeting in Gambia. This was held from February 25 to March 2, 2018. The theme for this WACS meeting that year was: Healthcare financing innovations for training and Human de of Human resources for health in West Africa.
The opening ceremony was on February 26, where the President of Gambia was invested as the grand patron. He declared the 58th annual conference open.
West African College of Surgeons Primaries 2018
Yearly, the West African College of Surgeons do conduct some fellowship examinations. These examinations are classified into three levels – Primary, Part 1 and Part 2.
The examinations do take place across various countries of the West African sub-region – done around April and October, annually.
This primary exams is a form of a written exam. The aim is to detect candidates with competency in basic medical sciences, including pathophysiology.
Candidates who pass the primary exam will meet a prerequisite for securing admission into any faculties of the college – such as surgery, dentistry, orthopaedics, obstetrics and gynecology, radiology, anaesthesia, and ophthalmology.
The Part 1 and 2 of the examinations look into the cognitive skills, knowledge, thesis defence, clinical examination, best practices of the candidate in theory, and viva voce.

West African College of Surgeons Exemption
Below are the requirements for exemption from the primary fellowship examination of WACS. The process must be completed at least a year before the intended date of doing the Part 1 exam.
If you want to apply for exemption, follow these steps.
- Step 1: An application letter addressing to the Secretary-General. Include your contact address, email address, and phone number.
- Step 2: An evidence that you have passed the Primary examination from equivalent colleges, i.e Success Letter.
- Step 3: A Certificate of Full Registration with the Medical and Dentist Council of the Resident Count of Application.
- Step 4: The Current Annual Practicing License Certificate.
- Step 5: A photocopy of NYSC Discharge Certificate or Certificate of Exemption. This only applies to Nigerians.
- Step 6: An evidence of change of name. If any.
- Step 7: A photocopy of MBBS Degree Certificate.
Exemption fee is N150,000.

West African College of Surgeons Conference
The West African College of Surgeons (WACS) often hold an annual general meetings and scientific conferences. The 2020 conference was held in International Conference Center (ICC), Abuja. It began on Monday, 17 February to Thursday 20 February, 2020. The event marks the 60th annual conference.
The theme of this year’s conference was “Surgery and Comprehensive Cancer Care in West Africa”.
West African College of Surgeons Faculty of Obstetrics and Gynaecology
The West African College of Surgeons has 7 faculties. These include Dental Surgery, Anaesthesia, Ophthalmology, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Surgery, Radiology, and Otorhinolaryngology.
To gain the award of a fellowship in faculty of Obstetrics and Gynecology, a period of four to six years is required. Here, the examination into this programme is in two parts, Part I and Part II. A candidate must meet up with some requirements.

The West African College of Surgeons Journal is very informative. The Journal of the West African College of Surgeons (JWACS) is being Indexed in PubMed.
The mission statement of the Journal is to be an international portal to publish scholarly research works, relevant to the management of surgical and related diseases in West Africa, and other zones around the world.
The aim here is to publish good quality and relevant manuscripts in the surgical sciences and provide updates relating to the management of diseases in surgery, and other specialties. This would have positive impact on the outcome of those diseases in Africa and other parts of the world.
West African College of Surgeons Dissertation
Till today, advanced countries around the world have never used Thesis or Dissertation for fulfillment of certification – as far as surgical post-graduate exams is concerned.
Disseminations or Theses in medical clinical settings are not to be part of an exit post-graduate Fellowship exam in surgery. They are for awarding higher post-graduate degrees.
