Early life and education
Folorunsho Alakija started her early education at the Apostle’s Lady primary school in Abeokuta. However, at age 7, her parent moved together with her to the United Kingdom where she continued her primary school education at Dinorben School for girls in the UK.
After the completion of her primary school education, Folorunsho Alakija returned to Nigeria and enrolled for her secondary school in Muslim High School in Sagamu town, Ogun State, Nigeria.
She left Nigeria for the United Kingdom to study Secretarial Studies at the prestigious Pitman’s Central College, London. She then returned to England for her secretarial studies at Pitman’s Central College, London.
Folorunsho Alakija started her early career as a secretary at the Sijuade Enterprise in Lagos, Nigeria immediately after completing her studies at the Pittman’s College in London. A few years later, she moved to FinBank which is now acquired by First City Monument Bank (FCMB).
She served in FinBank as an Executive Secretary for more than 5 years. She later served as the manager of the public affairs department of the Merchant Bank of Nigeria. She was later to the treasury department where she served as the assistant secretary for more than 3 years.
After her career in the banking sector for over 12 years, Folorunsho Alakija decided to pursue her passions and dreams of fashion.
Driven by the desire to succeed she applied to the Central School of fashion and was given admission. After the completion of her studies in the fashion school, Folorunsho Alakija returned to Nigeria and established the Rose of Sharon House of Fashion. A few years later, her brand became a household fashion brand in Nigeria.
In 1993 Folorunsho Alakija applied for an Oil well, her application was approved by the then Military government of Gen. Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida.
A license to explore oil was given to her oil company Famfa Oil.
As of September 2021, Folorunsho Alakija is the 82 nd most powerful woman on Earth according to Forbes. Folorunsho Alakija is also the richest woman in Nigeria, and also the richest black woman as of 2020.
